The Spectrum of Dysregulation: A Clinical Analysis of Adult ADHD, Borderline Personality Disorder, and the Evolving Australian Healthcare Landscape
Australian General Practitioners are currently navigating a “dual wave” of complex neurobehavioural presentations, where the intense interpersonal dynamics of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) collide with an explosive surge in Adult ADHD diagnoses. This article outlines strategies for managing these resource-intensive conditions within the constraints of the standard 15-minute consultation, emphasising that while BPD requires a non-pharmacological approach centered on strict boundaries and the “United Front” against splitting, the landscape for Adult ADHD is shifting toward GP-led management, particularly with pending regulatory reforms in Western Australia. By mastering the differential diagnosis between the emotional impulsivity of BPD and the executive dysfunction of ADHD, and utilising specialised “Neurobehavioural Hubs,” GPs can effectively mitigate the significant economic and social burden of these disorders while protecting their own clinical capacity.
