About Jungian Dream Analysis
Carl Jung & Analytical Psychology
Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology. Jung believed that dreams are messages from the unconscious mind, offering insights into our inner world and guiding us toward psychological wholeness—a process he called individuation.
Unlike purely symbolic interpretation, Jungian analysis sees dreams as living expressions of the psyche, revealing both personal concerns and universal human patterns.
Key Concepts
The Collective Unconscious
A shared reservoir of human experience containing universal symbols and patterns (archetypes) inherited across generations.
Archetypes
Universal, primordial images and themes that appear across cultures: the Self, Shadow, Anima/Animus, Wise Old Man, Hero, and more.
The Shadow
The unconscious aspects of ourselves we deny or repress. Shadow work involves acknowledging and integrating these hidden parts.
Individuation
The lifelong process of becoming your authentic self by integrating conscious and unconscious aspects of the psyche.
Symbols
Dream images carrying meaning beyond their literal appearance. Water often represents the unconscious, journeys symbolize transformation, etc.
Active Imagination
A practice of engaging with dream symbols consciously to deepen understanding and facilitate psychological integration.
